Yokohama Floating Data Center
Yokohama Floating Data Center Data Center, Japan
The proposed floating data center in Yokohama, Japan, is an innovative project spearheaded by a consortium of Japanese companies and financial institutions, including NYK Line, NTT Facilities, Eurus Energy Holdings, MUFG Bank, and the city of Yokohama. This demonstration project will be located at Yokohama Port’s Osanbashi Pier, utilizing a 25-meter by 80-meter mini-float platform.
The facility will house a containerized data center powered entirely by renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and battery storage systems. The consortium is also exploring the integration of offshore wind power to enhance sustainability. This initiative aims to test the feasibility of offshore data centers that operate with minimal environmental impact.
Construction is set to begin in the fall of 2025, with plans for potential expansion into Yokohama Port’s waterfront and marine areas based on the project's success. This cutting-edge development aligns with Japan's GX2040 Vision, which focuses on achieving carbon neutrality and advancing energy-efficient technologies. The floating data center represents a significant step toward sustainable digital infrastructure in the region
